April 2026 milestone

Tesla finally goes driverless in Austin

After years of L2+ "Full Self-Driving" with a human at the wheel, Tesla begins paid Cybercab rides in Austin with no safety driver — its first true Level 4 deployment. Waymo crosses 550K rides/week the same month. Five companies are now operating commercial driverless rides in the US, eight years after Waymo became the first.

    Open the app, drop a pin

    Waymo One, the Tesla app, or the Zoox app — same flow as Uber. Pick your spot, see the wait time and price up front.

    Pickups are usually 4–8 minutes. Pricing is a flat upfront quote — no surge.

  2. 02

    An empty car shows up

    A Jaguar I-Pace (Waymo), a Tesla coupe (Cybercab), or a four-seat pod (Zoox) rolls up to the curb. The roof display flashes your initials. There is no driver.

    First-timers: yes, the front seat really is empty. Yes, that's the steering wheel turning by itself.

  3. 03

    Tap unlock, get in

    Hit "unlock" in the app or use the door button on the car. Doors open. Sit anywhere — the front passenger seat is fair game.

    Stuck finding it on a busy block? Tap "honk" in the app and it'll chirp.

  4. 04

    Press "Start ride"

    A screen on the seatback (or the app) confirms your destination. Hit start. The wheel turns, the car eases into traffic, and that's the ride.

    It drives confidently — no jerky stops, no lane-change drama. Most people stop watching the road within five minutes.

    It pulls over and you walk away

    The car finds a legal spot near your address, unlocks, and waits. Step out, close the door, done. Receipt lands in the app.

    No tipping. No small talk. No "what brought you to town today?"

You can cast Spotify to the car stereo from your phone.
It nails 4-way stops. No "you go, no you go" standoffs.
Construction zones still trip it up — expect the occasional reroute.
There's a 24/7 support button on the screen if anything feels wrong.
Car seats are allowed. Bring your own — it has standard LATCH anchors.

Where the geofence ends

Six things today's robotaxis still can't do — and what to do instead

Robotaxi marketing is mostly highlight reel. These are the seams that show up after a few rides — useful to know before you cancel your Uber account.

Most still won't take a freeway

Waymo only opened freeway rides in Phoenix and SF in 2025, and Zoox is surface-streets only. Cross-town rides that obviously need 101 or I-10 still get routed down arterials, and a 12-minute Uber can become a 28-minute Waymo.

workaroundCheck the upfront ETA before booking. If the quote is suspiciously long, a human driver may be the move.

The geofence is a hard wall

Every service is bounded by a polygon on a map. Try to drop a pin one block outside Waymo's SF zone — say, into Daly City — and the app will simply refuse the ride. There is no "just this once."

workaroundRide to the edge, then transfer. Power users keep both Waymo and Uber installed for cross-boundary trips.

Airports are a special case

Phoenix Sky Harbor is the only major US airport with curbside Waymo pickups. SFO, LAX, and Austin-Bergstrom all force the car to a designated rideshare lot — you walk 5–10 minutes from the terminal each way.

workaroundTime your pickup for the lot walk, and don't expect drop-offs at departures curbs. A human driver is often the better airport play.

Hand-signals trip them up

A cop waving you through a flooded intersection, a valet pointing to a parking spot, a construction flagger reversing the flow — these are still hard. The car may stop, idle, or call remote support to figure it out.

Big events break the routing

Game day at Chase Center, a Coachella weekend in LA, a parade route through downtown — high-density events overwhelm the planning stack. Pickups can be flat-out unavailable for blocks around the venue, even if you're in-zone.

Snow, ice, and dense fog stop the show

Heavy rain causes a temporary pullover; snow and ice cause the whole fleet to pause. None of the major US services run a winter program, which is why Phoenix, Austin, and SoCal got commercial deployments first.

What people get wrong about robotaxis

Eight common claims, fact-checked against the data

Most arguments about self-driving cars are arguments from a 2018 article. Here's where today's commercial fleets actually stand on the eight claims that come up at every dinner table.

Mostly True

Self-driving cars are way safer than human drivers.

Across 56.7M rider-only miles, Waymo logged 90% fewer serious-injury crashes and 92% fewer pedestrian-injury crashes than the human baseline for the same cities. The catch: most of those miles are in mild-weather urban grids — not snowy interstates.

These things constantly block traffic and clog intersections.

Cruise was a real menace before GM shut it down — pile-ups in San Francisco intersections happened weekly. Waymo's modern fleet gets stuck about 1 in every 4,000 trips and remote operators usually free it inside two minutes. It still happens; the rate is just much lower than the headlines suggest.

They're rolling cameras that record everything around them.

Every robotaxi continuously logs LiDAR sweeps, 360° camera feeds, and audio inside the cabin. Footage is retained ~30 days by default. Police in SF, LA, and Phoenix have already subpoenaed it for unrelated criminal cases — sometimes successfully.

Robotaxis will replace human drivers in five years.

There are roughly 4,500 driverless cars operating in the US today against ~280 million registered passenger vehicles. Even at Waymo's current 2x-per-year ride growth, that's a 15-to-25 year glide path — and it skips the trucking and rural slices entirely.

Tesla FSD is the same thing as a Waymo.

Waymo, Zoox, and Aurora all run multi-sensor stacks (LiDAR + radar + cameras) with no human required. Tesla FSD is camera-only Level 2+, which means a licensed driver has to be ready to take over at all times. The Cybercab pilot in Austin is Tesla's first true Level 4 deployment, and it's invite-only with a tiny fleet.

If a robotaxi hits something, you're on the hook as the rider.

Operators carry the liability. Waymo and Zoox are self-insured and settle property and injury claims directly with affected parties. Riders don't need supplemental coverage and can't be sued for the car's behavior — the same way you can't be sued for an Uber driver's lane change.

They get confused by anything unusual on the road.

Edge cases that were nightmares in 2020 — double-parked delivery trucks, weird left turns, jaywalkers — are now handled smoothly. What still trips them up: human hand signals from cops or flaggers, big-event crowds, and sustained snow or ice. The car's response is to stop and ask remote support, not to guess.

Six sensor layers — and what Waymo has that Tesla skips

A modern L4 car runs perception through redundant, overlapping senses — each one covers what the others miss. Tesla's bet is that cameras alone are enough; everyone else stacks four sensor types on top of HD maps and dedicated compute. Here's what each layer is actually for.

The debate that matters: Tesla argues humans drive with two eyes, so cameras should be enough.
